The EU AI Act is no longer a future regulation. It is already in force, and many companies using AI today are already affected by it.

What the Act Actually Says

The EU AI Act (Regulation 2024/1689) entered into force on 1 August 2024. It is the first comprehensive legal framework focused specifically on artificial intelligence at this scale.

The Act does not ban AI broadly. Instead, it classifies AI systems according to the level of risk they create and assigns obligations based on that classification.

Some uses are prohibited outright

• manipulative AI exploiting vulnerabilities

• social scoring by public authorities

• certain forms of real-time biometric surveillance

Other systems are considered high-risk

These systems remain allowed, but only with specific controls in place such as:

• documented risk assessments

• bias testing

• human oversight

• monitoring after deployment

• technical documentation

The first obligations started applying in February 2025. Additional requirements for high-risk systems become enforceable on 2 August 2026.

What This Means for Your Business

The Act applies even if you did not build the AI system yourself

Companies using AI professionally are considered “deployers” and carry their own compliance obligations.

The regulation applies beyond EU-based companies

If your systems affect people located in the EU, the Act may still apply regardless of where your company is based.

Risk category changes everything

A customer support chatbot and an AI hiring system are treated very differently under the regulation.

Enforcement is already being prepared across EU member states

The operational side of compliance is becoming real, not theoretical.

This Week’s Action Point

Run the EU AI Act Compliance Checker for every AI tool currently used inside your company.

Document:

• what the tool does

• who uses it

• what risk category it may fall into

This creates a practical starting point before formal assessments become necessary.
